I thought about adding a bit about myself for a little while, and was pondering how to do so without being self-obsessed (On my blog?? Never!),but I thought it might be nice to tell some more about myself beyond the bits and pieces on here already… So here goes!

I guess one of the first questions is usually ‘What’s that accent?’

People never figure it out, it seems to vary wildly depending on where I am, who I’m with, and whether I’ve had a G&T or three. So let’s start with that.

I was born in the UK, but moved to the US as a young’un where I did most of my growing up… I’ve got a touch of Scottish, a touch of English, a touch of Europe and a good helping of the U.S in my voice- so when I’m trying to speak ‘queen’s English’ gosh I must sound like David Walliams in a dress on Little Britain , but mostly I think I just sound like me. If I try to sound too much like I did as a kid I reckon I just sound like George Dubya Bush… lets not go there.

I did quite a lot of traveling in the US and moved around a bit, and that has probably given me my life-long love for new places and experiences. I moved back to London initially just to study and explore because despite being born in the UK it was a place I’d probably spent the least time, and I stayed because I fell for the city in a big way.

Since then I’ve been based in London but I remain an inveterate traveler I guess, so I get itching for the road or rail after awhile and am often trying to sneak away here or there… Most extensive journeys were in Asia, India, and a good lot of Europe (though there’s still a lot to do) but a bit of Central America too (And North America obviously!).

I started dabbling in different fields  here, and have studied a wide variety so far of arts and science… but I still don’t know what I’ll be when I grow up, and might go in an entirely different direction again. A big regret is not taking languages or art more seriously as a kid, because I’d love to be able to ‘Parlez vous Francais’ beyond ordering a cuppa when I’m in Paris (although apparently, I pronounce several swear words absolutely spot on… I’ve never yet figured out why :) ) As for art, I am relatively clueless as to why a painting is good or bad, and my drawings consist of stick figures with horrendous genetic deformities, believe me, stick figures can be dreadful.

I’ve always been relatively active I guess, I play golf badly, probably play tennis badly these days, used to enjoy kickboxing, I walk everywhere, and I have grand plans to conquer the world of marathon running and my sweet tooth while I’m at it… I’d like to do more horse riding and hiking too should I find the time, maybe in 2011! I’m a supporter of a few charities mostly centering around environmental and ethical policies, and had intended to run my first marathon this year for Crisis, however an old ankle injury apparently means I should hold off on that for now, so a 10k is in the pipeline instead, and some more volunteering.

As for R&R I love good food, good wine, good books, good conversation, and I can argue about music or movies til the cows come home, and I thoroughly love both. I love the theater and the outdoors, and I love animals and life, and I like to think of myself as a happy person.

Probably my biggest pet peeves are discourtesy, willful ignorance and/or bureaucratic insanity, and puritans who preach equality behind the veil of “feminism” but are actually just backwards tyrants… Who could that be I wonder….

I am a feminist, and a sex worker, and despite some peoples insistence that the two are incompatible I seem to be doing just fine. The good news is I also luckily defy the aforementioned puritans by managing to avoid conforming to their narrow and insulting view of exactly what a sex-worker (or in their parlance, a “victim”) is: and I do this purely by being a free individual of voting age, who is in control of her own life (and her own voting ballot, and keyboard).

You wouldn’t think defying the governmental derogatory view of sex work and sex workers would be as easy- but whoops, I think I just did it again! And yes, it’s pretty obvious that the entire debate irritates me to no end- See Pet Peeves 1 through 4. They all fall within a particular category of peeve.

My profession par choix, was something I entered into after years of curiosity and arousal, and I am happy to spend my time with delightful, intelligent, excellent people with whom I never fail to have a good time, and I often learn a thing or two along the way- It’s a pleasure to meet new people and great to see old friends return again. Probably the other reason I so enjoy the arrangement is my love of giving pleasure and knowing I’ve made someone feel really good and content. I couldn’t ever act in a wham bam style and prefer to take my time and really engage and connect, so this is why I tend not to see many people as I don’t want it to be dull for either of us.

So anyway… That ended up being a lot longer than I intended it, but now you’ve got an idea of the lady behind the blog :)   Hope you enjoy, and if not there’s a picture at the top at least xx

    The Oscars ’10

    Monday, March 8th, 2010

As is evident perhaps from my occasional blog post or from my style or subject of conversation in person, I’m a bit of a film buff.

    A bit? ha!

Ok I love movies, and I love good movies and all that get poured into them.

There are some films I’ve seen that I’ve hated, but I’ll fall in love with the style of the shoot or this one amazing panning shot or….

Good movies were around a lot in the 70′s, the frame shifted away from the big MGM blockbuster melodramas and suddenly there was Copolla, Scorsese, Altman (in the 70′s…)…  Basically just good directors who made good movies with good stories on shoe-strings.

(Directors who, after getting bloated egos and budgets abruptly tossed everything they built away upon entering the 1980′s. Copolla is the golden example.  From 1972 to 1979 he was god. And have you seen what came after Apocalypse Now? righto, you get my point).

I would argue that the only two directors who were truly incredible in the 70′s who didn’t butcher their own vision for a paycheck in the 1980′s, was Kubrick and De Palma (In the 90′s was a different matter).

That kind of change in style also brought some new kind of actors, Brando and Nicholson were the guys before then,  and then DeNiro and Hoffman and Streep joined them. It ties in I guess to some of my favorite music, being from that time period as well. And I missed it! Good thing they put it all on DVD for me ;)

So this isn’t to say that I have a view of films that supposes they were better back in the day, and new movies can’t compare. Each year we get some awesome films, and some of those films get nominated for Oscars, and then one wins. Not all of those deserve to be nominated in my opinion, but some do, and some don’t.

Similarly, I’m shocked that ‘The Road’ didn’t receive a single nod (it does deserve it).

Hurt Locker was incredibly good, and for a buff like me, the knowledge that it had a 100:1 shooting ratio (beating Apocalypse Now’s legendary shoot) using 4 cameras and was done documentary style gives me the aesthetic appreciation giggles :)

Anyway, with that build up these are my picks for the big Oscars this year.

    Best Documentary: Food Inc

(Was a total eye opener, and should be required viewing for teenagers, but I say that about most movies).

Best Animated Film: Fantastic Mr Fox.

(Granted, ‘Up’ was both heart-warming and beautiful and once again Pixar had me weeping during the opening montage and set-up, but Mr Fox was stop-motion and the cumulative effort of probably a million man hours, and it is bloody GOOD).

    Best Original Score: Hurt Locker.

(I wanted to say Fantastic Mr Fox again, just for the incredible use of a children’s choir, but actually Hurt Locker was the better overall)

Best Writing Directly for the Screen: Up – Bob Petersen

(Sorry Tarantino, not this time, Up was lovely, and Jackie Brown was your real triumph).

Best Writing on Previously Adapted or Published Work – Precious

(The Academy loves this sort of thing)

    Best Director – Kathryn Bigelow

(Have you seen Hurt Locker? Good god it is incredible, and it is good to see a female director getting that kind of props. So I was wrong about Avatar and the Uncanny valley hypothesis, but it is still Ferngully 3d and doesn’t deserve best director)

    Best Supporting Actress – Mo’Nique

(They love first timers, and actually that movie was pretty excellent, and Mo’Nique was really good).

Best Supporting Actor – I Can’t call this one – I want to say Matt Damon, but I’ll go with Stanley Tucci

(I thought Invictus would win ALL the awards when I first saw the trailer for it. Nelson Mandela is in it and Eastwood directed it, looked dead-on, but with two noms and stiff competition, I bet it gets shoved right by)

    Best Actress – Gabourey Sidibe

(That is just something they would do. (The academy that is) They love break-outs, they love touching stories, they love young winners and goodness that would be awesome wouldn’t it? No one has ever one a Razzie and an Oscar in the same year so that cancels out Bullock, And Meryl Streep basically never wins but is nominated practically every single day. She’s the runner-up).

    Best Actor – Jeff Bridges

(Crazy Heart was made for him like The Wrestler was made for Mickey Rourke, even against Morgan Nelson Mandela Freeman, I’m betting Bridges!)

    Best Film – Hurt Locker

(This was one of the best movies ever. James Cameron was right when he said it is the Platoon of the generation. In 30 years it will be to war films what Apocalypse Now and Deer Hunter are today. Eventually one day, Avatar will look of it’s time and worn-out, District 9 will too, and Inglorious Bastards will seem passe, but Hurt Locker will still be there. Best Of the Year.)
